Movie Review: Gone Girl
written on Saturday, 13 December 2014 @ 05:51 ✈

Gone Girl is a thriller film based on 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn. I haven't read the book but it is definitely a great movie. With all the plot-twisting, the suspense, the complicated ideas and actors' mind-blowing performances, the film being nominated for Best Director, Screenplay, and Best Actress did not surprise me.

Amy (Rosamund Pike) fakes her own murder and frames her husband, Nick (Ben Affleck) to take the blame. Her plan to frame her husband for the murder is carefully detailed and almost perfect. The story started with me siding on the husband, knowing in my mind that he couldn't possibly killed his wife. As the story goes, the truth slowly comes to light. The plot was pretty shocking to me. In the end I was like, maybe they deserved each other. A psycho woman and a lying basterd. Plus, the gender issues in this film did not get the attention it deserved. Like how the media reacts to a news of a missing woman (and Amy was a famous person in the film even before she was missing), and how Nick's "lack of empathy" leads to the proof of guilt. In movies, there are girls like those Disney princesses in Frozen or Brave, heroines like in The Hunger Games or Divergent, then there's Amy. Amy doesn't just kill. She makes false accusations of rape. She's a sociopath who would even use her own child for her own gain. But she's believed.

The film is 2 hours, R-rated, and explicitly adult drama. It's a less mainstream movie and definitely stands out in terms of its content. I'm not sure everyone will like the ending but it's all about perspective.
