Book Review: The Bunker's Diary
written on Monday, 20 October 2014 @ 05:54 ✈
Title : The Bunker's Diary
Author : Kevin Brooks
Publisher : Penguin
Publication Date : March 7, 2013
Description from Goodreads : Room meets Lord of the Flies, The Bunker Diary is award-winning, young adult writer Kevin Brooks's pulse-pounding exploration of what happens when your worst nightmare comes true - and how will you survive?
I can't believe I fell for it.
It was still dark when I woke up this morning.
As soon as my eyes opened I knew where I was.
A low-ceilinged rectangular building made entirely of whitewashed concrete.
There are six little rooms along the main corridor.
There are no windows. No doors. The lift is the only way in or out.
What's he going to do to me?
What am I going to do?
If I'm right, the lift will come down in five minutes.
It did. Only this time it wasn't empty...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all, this is the book that made me just lay there motionless for a moment, curl up in a ball and cry. It was so intense and the book was incredibly hard to put down. I really don't know what to say about this book, like how to describe it. It's heart-breaking. It's brutal. It's a messed up book that will leave you restless and unhappy till the end of the day.
I'd say the story is kind of like the Saw movies but less gory. Some random people being kidnapped and thrown into an empty building, then a crazy psycho wanted to play this sick little game and we have no idea why those people deserved it. Linus is the first person to be abducted, soon followed by 5 other people and the story is written from his point of view. What I really admire is the relationship between Linus and this little girl Jenny, the youngest among the victims. He protected her like a brother and if anything, he would put her first. You can see his entries become gradually different as the result of being locked up in a bunker for a long period of time.
And the ending...oh my God, the ending. After reading his final entry, I find myself flipping through the next empty pages searching for more entry, thinking 'This can't be it'. I felt like throwing the book across the room then tear it to tiny pieces like it did to my poor little heart. I just need a closure, like an explanation for their sufferings. I read the synopsis, I read the cover, I even read the author's background section. But no, the ending was just like that. It left me with so many unanswered questions. And I think Linus ate Jenny, judging from what he mentioned about meat, flesh, and energy(?). My hands trembled as I read because I learned the fact that he loved that girl.
This is the first mystery/thriller/horror novel I've ever read and it took me almost a week to get over the story. It's an amazing book but at the same time scared the crap out of me.

Hi! So there's nothing much going to be around here. I read a lot. I read almost everything that has print on it. Everything from flowery romance to pretentious fiction to poetry. If you came here to stalk on my activities, then you've came to the wrong place. There's a special place for that but I'm not gonna speak of it here. Here is the place where I rant about books (mostly), musics, tv shows, movies, foods, and my personal opinion about all kind of stuff which I would like to share. I don't really share in real life, especially food. But I'll make this an exception (i'll share the pictures of food). So if you don't mind reading my rambles, fair warning; you may not be able to understand a single word I'm going to say because of my overflowing emotions. But just take the chance anyways. Oh this isn't a diary, just so you know.
