Book Review : Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes
written on Saturday, 8 February 2014 @ 10:29 ✈
Title : Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes
Author : Chris Crutcher
Publisher : Greenwillow Books
Publication Date : March 18, 2003
Description from Goodreads : Sarah Byrnes and Eric have been friends for years. When they were children, his fat and her terrible scars made them both outcasts. Later, although swimming slimmed Eric, she stayed his closest friend.
Now Sarah Byrnes -- the smartest, toughest person Eric has ever known -- sits silent in a hospital. Eric must uncover the terrible secret she's hiding, before its dark currents pull them both under.
------------------------------------------------------------
So, I just read the title and it caught me. Chris Crutcher wrote a lot of books that involves sports and real issues like child abuse. This is my first Chris Crutcher book and it is really good though I am not a huge fan of sports.
It is a heart-wrenching story about Eric, nicknamed "Moby", who befriends with Sarah Byrnes, who is a victim of his abusive father. She is badly scarred all over her face because of an incident that happened to her when she was a child. Eric used to be obese but when he's in high school, he started swimming. He ended up losing his weight, not thin, but he's no longer that fat kid everyone used to make fun of. Unlike him, Sarah's scars won't be miraculously disappear. One day, Sarah stops speaking. Not responding to anything. She ended up in the psych ward. Eric wanted to know why. Sarah is her best friend. She is the toughest girl he's ever known and he wanted to figure out what is the reason behind her silence. As I dive into each pages, I felt the sensation of my heart racing, sad, angry, and depressed. There is also some humor in it that made the story enjoyable.
The bond between Eric and Sarah is extremely touching. How many man would want to be fat for your sake? Seriously. However, there are also some serious topic such as religion, abortion, and suicide. Religion came up a lot within this book. Although the religion it mentioned is different than mine, I try to understand what the author try to convey.
Overall, I think the story is realistic. Child abuse is a serious issue. And this story tells a lot about loyalty. I'm glad I read it.

Hi! So there's nothing much going to be around here. I read a lot. I read almost everything that has print on it. Everything from flowery romance to pretentious fiction to poetry. If you came here to stalk on my activities, then you've came to the wrong place. There's a special place for that but I'm not gonna speak of it here. Here is the place where I rant about books (mostly), musics, tv shows, movies, foods, and my personal opinion about all kind of stuff which I would like to share. I don't really share in real life, especially food. But I'll make this an exception (i'll share the pictures of food). So if you don't mind reading my rambles, fair warning; you may not be able to understand a single word I'm going to say because of my overflowing emotions. But just take the chance anyways. Oh this isn't a diary, just so you know.
